Topic: Money-counting, spending, and using it wisely with the help of the Internet
Objectives (Learning Goals):
- Count
- Convert and use coins and currency
- Students will see that the Internet is user-friendly in the process

Rationale for selecting this site: They contain weekly specials and on-line info for our local grocery stores.
Name of Web site: Funbrain and Puzzlemaker
Rationale for using this site: Funbrain changemaker offers practice in calculating change back. It has four degrees of difficulty. Money is realistic and it is not childish. Puzzlemaker will create word searches and crisscross puzzles on-line free.
Other materials:
"Classroom cash" paper and pencils, calculators (helpful) blackboard and chalk
Teacher Preparation:
Bookmark sites. Put addresses on the board as well. Review sites prior to class to ensure maximum use of info (grocery stores). Optional- create worksheets to use while on line and change scenario cards.
Steps for learners:
Description of pre-computer/classroom activities (preparation)
- Review through class discussion the value of money, how we spend it, ways to count it. Discuss the way the Internet might aid us in money use and management.
- Go on-line to grocery sites and peruse them.
- Students add up totals on grocery list- (review decimal placement and importance of estimating and rounding )
- Use classroom cash to make change repeat using change scenario cards
- Go on-line to Funbrain to practice.
Description of computer/online activities
- At market sites, students choose 10 items from the weekly specials. Students may print out "web bucks" for their use. Students may fill out bonus card application on-line and print.
- At Funbrain students play and practice making change.
- At Puzzlemaker, Students create puzzles using vocabulary from lesson i.e. decimal, quarter, Ben Franklin, coupon, etc.
Description of follow up activities
Take home:
- Students exchange puzzles to work for fun.
- Students use info from weekly specials and coupons in their own shopping.
- Students are challenged to use the practiced money counting skills in their everyday transactions.
- The sites are available for students to use regularly- Specials change weekly.
